My Idea

There are a few people that read and/or care about this blog, and I don't want to disappoint them by making only one post on it. I know it's been rather overdue, I know, and I apologize to those who have been awaiting another post from me.

Tonight, right when I was trying to sleep, I had an idea that hit me. A very simple idea for a website. Let me preface this by an explanation of its purpose. It seems to me that one the problems of progression towards things like world peace or just a better future is that people become rather complacent and start to think that others don't care. So why not show them that there are others who do, and show them why? Show them that there are plenty of people in the world that care about it and it's future just as much as you. Perhaps you could share the inspiration for change that we seem to lack now, spread it around in a way that millions of people (at least potentially) could see in an instant.

My idea is this...have a website just for people to post quotes by, or tell stories about people that made them believe we can be better than we are as a human race. Allow them to post a picture of the person who said or did it, if they have one and if they so wish. Then, as people post, it loads into a database that's accessible to everyone with an internet connection. The main page would be very simple. It would just be (for the most part) a link so you can post yourself, and one story/quote/explanation at a time. So people who visit the site immediately get hit by something that gives us hope that the world doesn't have to be so terrible, and there are others in it that truly care about how it turns out, and what road it goes down. These people don't have to be famous, they don't have to be a John Lennon, or a Mother Teresa, they can be "ordinary" citizens of the world. You don't have to be a historical figure to make a difference you know. ;) So maybe tell me what you thin, and if someone reads this that can help me make it, let me know please!

There's something about flowers. Not the kind you find in the wild or the shops, but in meticulously cared for gardens tended by old ladies. Each plant, to them, has a story, a reason, a purpose. That one was purchased the day before Katrina hit. This one was rescued out of someone's yard after the fact, somehow surviving.

Gardening is raison d'etre for these people, and they bring an elevated beauty all over the world, simply by working against nature to bring about beauty.

Despite my own black thumb, I tend to notice the extra care someone has used in their creation. Professional land-scaping has an obvious sterility, but this old women, placing their knees on ragged cushions, tireless work. Paintings that do not conform to shape, only idea, which will, inevitably, die if that attention is not continually paid.

So that's how I know that your idea can work. It will require a number of dedicated individuals who believe in their own ability to shape their worlds. It may not be what they envisioned, but it will ultimately be better than an untended scrap of land.
